Dan is a journalist who specializes in environmental health issues. He won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for his book Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation. Toms River also won the Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism and the National Academies Communication Award, among other literary prizes. The New York Times called it “a new classic of science reporting”.

As a young boy, Dan had a collection of over 300 Matchbox toy cars.
He is an associate professor of journalism at New York University and is director of NYU’s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP) graduate program, one of the oldest and best-regarded science journalism training programs in the world.
