Cassiope (pronounced ca-sigh-a-pee, Cassie for short) is named after an alpine plant, the mountain heather — a small low-lying plant with bell-shaped flowers. Interesting enough, there is also a Canadian satellite that is named Cassiope (Cascade Smallsat and Ionospheric Polar Explorer)! Cassie’s grandfather’s first reaction to her name was, “Is she named after the satellite!” He is a retired electronic engineer and was pretty excited about that prospect.
