After completing a political science degree from the University of Alberta, Brian was hired as a bus driver for the Edmonton Transit System. In 1989 he was elected as a City Councillor in Edmonton and remained in that position though three more elections for a total of 11 years. In 2000 he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the constituency of Edmonton Highlands-Norwood, winning relection in 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2012. He has been the official leader of Alberta’s New Democratic Party since 2004.
