In Laurie’s words:
Actor to theatre Producer to Politician. With my BFA in Acting I went on to act in various locations across the Prairies in theatre, film and radio. Frustrated with the lack of roles for modern women I commissioned my friends to write and compose plays which I then produced and performed in. That moved me to managing different theatres and arts/women focused agencies including as Executive Director for the Advisory Council on Women’s Issues. Always political and a militant feminist I continued that work to political life in 1997. Representing downtown Edmonton in all its diversity is a great joy and daily challenge. This combines my desire to change the world and to help women, the GLTBQ community, people of different race and ethnic background, and others achieve full and equal participation in the life of the province. I’m married to another change agent politician, Councillor Ben Henderson and we spend our spare time with 2 dogs and 4 cats.
