<\/div>\nAmarjeet was first elected to Edmonton City Council in 2007, and took on a number of special initiatives in his first term. Amarjeet was the Council sponsor of Safedmonton, a city-wide committee working on community solutions for crime prevention and drug issues, worked as advisor to the REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities<\/a> and also served as a member of the Edmonton Police Commission<\/a>. Among his current initiatives are Public Transit, for which he also serves as Edmonton’s representative on the Canadian Urban Transit Association<\/a> and holds portfolios including seniors, poverty elimination, multiculturalism and Racism Free Edmonton<\/a>. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association<\/a> as VP and Director for cities more than 500,000 people.

In 2013 he was was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal<\/a>.<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n

In 2014 he was recognized with an Edmonton Interfaith Advocate Award for his work promoting welcoming and socially inclusive communities.<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n

According to an Edmonton Journal article<\/a> about him:\n
<\/div>\n“In 1988, when Sohi was a young social activist doing volunteer development work in India, he was arrested by authorities in the state of Bihar and accused of being a terrorist. He was beaten and tortured. He was held without charges and without trial for almost two years. Most of that time was spent in solitary confinement.”<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n
