Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Andrew is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and captain for the Edmonton Oilers. He’s played in the NHL since the 1999–2000 season and counts the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, the Boston Bruins (with which he won a Stanley Cup Championship in 2011) and the Edmonton Oilers among the teams he has played for.
Says Andrew:
You work as hard as you can at everything you do, especially with sports because if it works, great. It’s unbelievable. But don’t count on it working. Always, always have a back-up plan in case things take a detour. Be prepared for that by doing well in school and having other interests.
Wait a minute. What’s all this about a tribe?
Well, the tribe is the active-living fanatics of November Project, a free public exercise group. They’re part of the Miguelito’s Little Green Car community too. See if you can spot the car in the group photo.
(Hint: look at the bottom left, above the kids.)Andrew has played over 900 games in the NHL. (And counting.)
Teaming with environmentalist David Suzuki, Andrew helped create a carbon-neutral program for the NHL, which now includes over 500 players who purchase carbon offset credits to counteract the negative environmental impact of professional sports.
He is rumoured to be a fan of English Premier League football club Arsenal F.C..
He is married to Krista, a former professional snowboarder.
His mom was a GP and his dad was a dentist.
He was born in Edmonton but grew up in Sherwood Park, Alberta.
