Nancy has lived in Canmore, Alberta since 1993. She took up mountain climbing shortly after moving there, and along with her husband Doug Fulford, has been an avid climber ever since. Nancy was the first female and sixth person to climb all 54 mountains over 11,000′ in the Canadian Rockies. She is currently working on climbing all of the routes described in Fifty Classic Climbs of North America. No one has yet completed this list. Nancy works for the Alpine Club of Canada and The Banff Centre, showing films from the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.

Dr. Samarasekera is the 12th president of the University of Alberta, one of the top 100 universities in the world. She holds a B.Sc. (in mechanical engineering) from the University of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), a M.Sc. (in mechanical engineering) from the University of California, as a Hayes Fulbright Scholar, and a Ph.D. (in metallurgical engineering) from the University of British Columbia.
Serving the community in a wider capacity, Dr. Samarasekera sits on the Boards of Directors of the Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), NINT (the National Institute of Nanotechnology) and Industry Canada’s Science, Technology and Innovation Council. She has served on the Conference Board of Canada, the Public Policy Forum and as a member of a President’s Visiting Committee at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Samarasekera has also served as a consultant to steel companies around the world.
Dr. Samarasekera is member of the Royal Society of Canada, an Officer of the Order of Canada, and has received Honorary Degrees from the University of British Columbia, Queens University in Belfast, Ireland and the University of Waterloo.

Pat was first person in the world to have climbed the highest peaks of all seven continents: Mount McKinley in North America, Aconcagua in South America, Mount Everest in Asia, Elbrus in Europe, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Vinson Massif in Antarctica, and Puncak Jaya in Oceania.
