Joan is an extraordinary example of how one person can produce social glue across a city, a country, the world. Joan is not someone who is interested in leading the parade, rather she is the person who will do everything to ensure, if the parade is truly for the right reason of elevating all, she will press the uniforms, ensure everyone is playing (or singing) from the same song sheet and is in the right place at the right time. Joan is highly respected for the depth and breadth of her knowledge of international affairs and the work of the United Nations and it’s agencies; she is a solution-seeker and intelligent interlocator on most pressing international issues – and is as willing to engage others from high school as she is her diplomatic peers. Joan has build relationships across the country for the United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada) and their work of growing global citizens. She has inspired hundreds of others to become volunteers and she has built and tended a Canada-wide volunteer infrastructure with patience or creative impatience. Joan is considered the warmest entry point for frightened refugees who call UNA-Canada not knowing how to broach the Canadian system and the most trusted sounding board on difficult institutional, diplomatic or career paths for young interns and volunteers.
